Southgate's Stubbornness Stalls England: Where Was Cole Palmer?

England's Euro 2024 campaign began with a whimper, not a bang, as they were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Denmark. While a point away from home isn't a disaster, the performance lacked the creativity and spark needed to truly dominate. However, the biggest talking point wasn't the result, but Gareth Southgate's inexplicable decision to keep the in-form Cole Palmer glued to the bench.

England started brightly, with Harry Kane finding the net early. However, the attacking impetus fizzled out quickly. The midfield lacked a creative spark, with Southgate's experiment of deploying Trent Alexander-Arnold in a central role proving ineffective. The full-backs, usually a source of attacking threat, were subdued, and the final ball into the box was consistently wayward.

This is where Cole Palmer's inclusion could have made a world of difference. The young Chelsea star, fresh off a phenomenal season where he topped the Premier League in combined goals and assists, was a surprise omission from the starting lineup. Fans and pundits alike were left scratching their heads as Southgate opted for a more conservative approach, leaving Palmer to watch from the sidelines.

Southgate's tactics were overly cautious, especially considering Denmark's recent dip in form. England needed someone to unlock the Danish defense, someone with the vision and dribbling ability to create chances. Palmer, with his pace, close control, and eye for a killer pass, possesses the exact skillset that was missing from the Three Lions' attack.

The second half offered little improvement. Southgate eventually turned to his bench, but even the introduction of attacking players like Ollie Watkins and Jarrod Bowen couldn't spark a breakthrough. The game petered out into a frustrating stalemate.

Southgate's stubbornness in not utilizing Palmer is a worrying sign. England needs to be bold and embrace young talent, especially those in top form. Palmer's exclusion raises questions about Southgate's tactical flexibility and his willingness to trust young players on the biggest stage.

England have a chance to bounce back, but they need to learn from their mistakes. Hopefully, Southgate will recognize the error of his ways and unleash the likes of Cole Palmer in the upcoming matches. Otherwise, England's Euro 2024 dream could turn into a nightmare.
